Trade Union Facilities
Saving time and spreading the potential costs for Portsmouth Schools
Schools and academies have a statutory duty to allow staff who are lay trade union representatives to take time off to fulfil their trade union functions, and to undertake appropriate training. Six unions are recognised locally. It has historically proved efficient for one representative to support members in several schools, thereby sharing the costs of training etc. This service allows the costs of work above school level to be shared fairly between schools/ academies, irrespective of which school/academy actually employs the representatives. Contributions are pooled and used to provide backfill supply cover in accordance with the budget agreed with local union secretaries.

This approach also removes the need for individual schools/academies to negotiate trade union facilities arrangements for each union with membership at the relevant Academy school.

Portsmouth City Council has a teacher trade union recognition agreement with for the following unions; NUT, NASUWT, ASCL, ATL, NAHT, VOICE.
